Make your own Cognac with woodchips from used French Cognac barrels. After adding a clear liquor like Vodka or Dry Gin the chips will slowly release their flavour and colour as if your liquor is ageing in a Cognac barrel!
With this bottle, you can turn a clear liquor into Cognac. The woodchips inside the bottle come from shredded French Cognac barrels that have been used to make Cognac for decades. Although the chips are small, they still contain a lot of Cognac flavour. This flavour will be released after adding a clear liquor, as if you’re ageing your liquor in a Cognac barrel.
1 Add liquor
You start off by adding a clear liquor, like Vodka or Dry Gin. Always make sure the liquor contains at least 30% alcohol. Don’t add Cognac, because this will hardly have any effect. On the label, write down the bottle date and the type of liquor you’ve used. If possible, try using leftover liquor you have at home.
2 The ageing process
After you’ve filled up your bottle, let it age in a cool and dark place. The woodchips will slowly start to release their Cognac flavour and warm colour. Don’t hesitate to taste every now and then to experience how the flavours develop over time. This process takes approximately eight weeks, but feel free to find out what happens if you let it age longer.
3 Serve your own Whisky
After eight weeks, it is time to serve your own Cognac. Filter or carefully pour the liquor before drinking it. Make sure you don’t pour any of the woodchips into your glass. Also, never eat the woodchips.
4 Cheers!
